north shore waves...
aloha our dear o'hana,
another day in paradise... set out for a day to play in the water with our local hawaiian o'hana. we all piled into kimo's vanagon, stacks of surfboards...7 footers to as high 10 foot boards, piled high next to us, off to the north shore in search of waves. i caught my biggest wave!! 3 to 4 feet hawaiian, which is the equivalent to 6 to 8 feet from the base of the the wave to the peak. these waves were definitely a beast of their own...growing ever so gracefully, high up into the air...and then curling over and wiping out everyone in sight as it broke. i got caught in the "toilet bowl" a few times...being squooshed around and all the while gaining an extra foot or two on my leash (it attaches to my ankle from my surfboard). humbled by mother nature and yet also so blessed by her in the same hour. occasional sightings of the sacred turtles in the ocean reminded us that the ocean is shared by so many.
a wonderful surprise by my roommates today...a pre-cut surfboard, ready to be designed on and glassed for me!! i just finished up with my surfboard design. a big fat buddha sitting on a lotus flower to go on my 3rd board. it's a 9 foot, 3 inch thick long board that is specifically designed for me. i'll submit the pics' once it's all done. i can't wait!!
with love,
ye

sunrise

got up early yesterday morning to head out for a sunrise surf. been doing these for a while now so we've got to see some nice mornings. this however, ranks as one of the best to date. twlight was all purples, pinks and oranges. little grays left over but not much. as i walked down to the beach, i noticed i could see the next island over to the southeast "molokai" pretty clearly. which most mornings is hard to see. then i noticed several other land masses. thought wow, that's cool. like a panoramic shot between the green blue hued ocean and a layer of pastel colored clouds. there emerged in the middle was 4 distant islands: molokai, lanai, maui and the big island. that's almost 75+ miles of clear viseabilty. guess it just happend to be the right mix of clear low skies, soft light, morning sun and calm ocean. then for the next 10 minutes, we surfed in the morning light waiting for the sun to burst over maui. a mental snapshot to last for a lifetime. the shape of our home atop this ancient volcano mtn chain. the history, events and its people.

6am sessions
we went out one morning with our little cheapo fuji water camera and shot a series of photo's. its what a typical morning session is. the norm is: up early, load boards, off to beach, paddle out, surf, head home. many many variables change each morning though. these photos are when its small, not to windy and just fun to tool around while catching some mushy high tide waves. in case your wondering... dependeing on the reef & break, a high tide will produce a larger mushy wave since its energy typically is deep and slower moving. its pushing farther into the shore and will break softer along the way.
anyhow from the photos ye looks super brown almost blends in at times. we'll post more as the days go by.

island life
ah hah! finally have a night to play around with our scanner. we have a 3 in 1 hp and just figured out how to put up some new photo's. well not really new, since these have all been shot in the past year. but you get the point & now you'll get to see some of the things we've been up to out here in the south pacific. still looking for a proper CSS coded gallery section/plugin. just picked up photoshop as well from some "friends" and will be able to trick some of these photos out and make them look digital quality soon enough. for now though you get basic fuji film scanned jpegs. so thanks for the patience on the oldskool style click and view.

(4) my cheapo on gas transpo! $10-12 bucks a month in gas total ! lots of scoots on the island so its pretty standard to see'um around. plus with full health coverage i feel a tad bit safer using this as my daily transpo to the office and errand running.

bike messengers ride on the edge

check these links out. if you like to ride you'll dig this guys movies. he uses a homemade helmet cam to go on rides throught the city of NYC, Boston and immediate burbs of each. hit the site and go to his streaming video section if this link i provide doesn't already take you there. i'm assuming you'll need some good connection speeds to view.
watch in "ahhh" how these riders make the urban jungle look tame.
personal note: after being hit by multiple cars (all drivers faults mind you) i watch this video and cannot express how sickly talented these guys are. also i've attached a rather fun link to some good ol'fashion common sense city riding tips. keep it upright and enjoy.

* found Manuel Fallmann's work a while back & i enjoy its darkness, the message is so dead on. (as well as his other work) in case Manuel has tracked this link: "hope you don't mind the props and not everybody in the USA are assholes. please remember 48-49% of us do not want G.W.BUSH & his monkeys in command !"
Check it out.

Gas Chambers
cool photo i found of the real surfers of the ocean!

slept in this morning. awoke and the muscles are way to sore to load up the boards for a sunrise session. pitty though it looks like its a good mornnig out there. surfed my brains out yesterday. double session and logged 4hours.
in the morning we cruz'd up to north shore for a session at gas chambers, a spot right next to pipeline. small waves today so we had to surf closer to shore than expected. sHALLow chunky reef & slow moving waves. just out and about in the morning sun. we weren't the only ones out this morning. many little surprises in the water. lots of tropical fishes buzzing about beneath us. flashes of multi colors zipping along in various schools. guess they are alot like us. morning mantras and routines. then the sea turtles ("honu" in hawaiian) decided to let us know they were chilling in the line-up as well. so many out this morning. like subs coming up to the surface they pop up right next to you. kinda freak you out at first cuz your not really expecting it. then they look over and around with those soft black eyes. checkin the area out. sometimes i feel like they can see into your soul when they look at you. so quiet and chill. dark eyes with such old souls. i ended up seeing about 7 throught the session. then out of nowhere this huge whale starting jumping out of the water about a 1/2 mile out in front of us. the ocean is clean and glassy mind you so visability is far. super cool to see the whale just heaving itself out of the water and bombing back down with a huge splash. the first and early sighting of the up coming whale season. or should i say the start of the whale season. soon enough you'll be able to see them all the time. ye is always so stoked and seems to see them whenever everybody else isn't looking.
another side note is from the other day. so i'm siting in the line-up and waiting for a set. out of the blue rockets this dolphin with a twist and curl of its body in the air, then disappeared. very unexpected and a good reminder we're not alone out there.
the afternoon session started about 3 over at diamond head. chunkywaves, light trades, high tide, mushy and head high. good single fin riding for the long board. lots of people out though. only a few regulars in the line up so it made sitting in the right spot pretty easy since everyone else is following the monkey see monkey do attitude.
i need some serious coffee this morning. body wants to sleep & mind wants to go. odd space to be in.

montreal via KEXP.org

my new favorite band...."the arcade fire" out of montreal. one of my most fav cities and my old stomping ground as a teenager. learned to party and drink underage in this city. got my first fake id at 16 saying i was 19 or 20? in quebec you can drink at 18. needless to say many a weekend road trip was made across the border & was spent drinking, exploring the city, and freezing our ass's off. so many good memories of that place.
i was turned onto this group of course by one of the most progressive radio stations in the country. www.kexp.org. then found out later arcade fire is out of quebec. stoked! love this station though and its a religion for 8+ years now. can't say enough good about it. as some of the loyal following knows. to be free musically is a wonderful thing. to have a true free form indie style station like this on the air waves which seem to be filled with clear channel spoon fed shit music is another. anywhere in the world is ok for this place. even for me 2500 miles away i just kick the dial to the url and bam there you have it.
check it out if you want an earful.

namaste...
namaste,
here are a few pics' from my trip to india:
1. himalayan iyengar yoga center: that's where i took some intense yoga classes where i discovered a new relationship for the meaning of how important a strong foundation is not only in my yoga practice, but in life. and also i got to learn work on getting buns of steel in every class i took :) every morning was a breathtaking walk deep in the himalayas, with the snow line in view...the sun slowly creeping up from behind the mountains. monkeys playing in the trash, watching our every move.
2. tourist amidst buffalo: yup, that's me being a tourist...a perfect kodak moment! up close & personal...that was the constant mission in india was to avoid stepping in this sacred animal's poop :) we had just gotten off our 14 to 16 hour train ride from delhi to patankot, 3 hour bus ride to dharamsala, and 20 minute taxi ride to mcleod ganj, where his holiness the dalai lama is in exile. what an incredible pilgrimage!
3. bike shop in kathmandu: i had to take this picture for corey. state of the art wheels!!
4. rooftop picture in naikap, nepal: looking off of doug's family's rooftop in the wee hours of sunrise, a time of total peace and silence.
5. tourist & mini-buddha: i love this picture!! this was at mcleod ganj...i just grabbed this mini-monk and asked him to pose with me. so cute!!
6. temple walk: sacred prayer flags and beautifully painted holy stones on our walk to the buddhist temple...prayer wheels being turned...chanting "om mani padme hum".
wednesday, november 10th is world peace day. "may peace prevail on earth."
loving aloha,
ye

swell in town for the weekend
heavy rains last night and tonight. probably going to be some good flooding in town. last week UH had a 5million dollar cleanup. one scientist lost a 35year cloning experiment and the University library took on 6-8" on the floor levels. at work 3 cars were swept away in the massive down pour. one note about living on an island 2500miles from the mainland...when it rains...it pours.
today we spent the day getting the studio apt in some sort of organized fashion. trying to trim the life even more down to the essentials of what we need and use. wanted to load the boards and head to the surf. but i'll hold out until the morning. surf is building and if i know the local reports they'll be off by a day or so. ye and i picked up a couple movies for the night and might top it off with a 6pack of local brew. chill night to say the least. would have liked to spent more time tonight loading files of photos to this blog. but after further review of the plug-ins required, i'm tentative to go forth until i get more technical research out of the way. for now, check out these 3 links. i use them to help me understand and keep dialed into the surf.

new computer smell, good
Its friday and only an hour before the weekend hits. good news this afternoon at work. i love new toys and i love new toys when they come from the apple store. which by the way we have one about 10 minutes from the house. let me tell yah....its addicting to go there and check out all the latest gadgets. they just busted out the new imac G5's, ipods, and 30" flat screens. sweeeeeet stuff right there. not to mention the entire store is set up so you can play with everything they sell. ye hates it when we go near that place. the smooth design ideas, fast systems, white virgin like colors of the newly laid out concepts. sitting there waiting for you to slip onto the keyboard and take her for a spin. guess i get the same feeling at a nice bike shop as well. :-) i've always had a thing for steel frames. but that's a story for another day.
anyhow, today i get the news of my latest toy is on the way. i've been blessed with some new fun fun fun. of course as in anything in life i have to give up something to get something. my current system (17" flat screen G4), in exchange for the new imac 17" G5.
me so happy!

Dawn Patrol
its november. most places in the country are pouring coffee this morning. peering through the windows from the warmth of their dwellings. lots of mornnig mantras happening and shuffling about.
here, the sky is rising with colorful shades of morning light. looked out over diamond head to see if there is any thick clouds about. checked the trees to guage the trade winds. soft morning pinks and oranges off the eastern side of the island. loaded the boards and headed down to cliffs for a session.
1-2 foot hawaiian style, somewhat glassy on the inside and a random chest high set every now and again on the outside. water was a little chilly. but we're still talking shorts only with no need for a rash guard. the paddle out was nice, got to see the sun burst through the clouds. caught a few nice waves, watched ye float down the wall on a few good ones. she's getting better and better and starting to feel the joys of longboarding. there is a great feeling to be had when you see a nice wave building out beyond the reef coming towards you. the feeling of turing the board, slipping a few good solid strokes in and the wave picking you up. quick to the feet and lean right. float on down the wall dragging your fingers in the aqua colored marble wall. kick out and do it again. this is stress relief if i had to say.
ye gives me the signal for one more wave then we head in and shuffle to the car. stopped at the local market for a thai coffee and a spam musibi breakfast. driving down the road with the lush green rolling mtns in the back drop. home to get ready for work. ye heads upstairs to the clinic and me a 2 minute cool morning scoot ride with only stop signs and a couple cars along the way. kicked on kexp.org (90.3), launched a few browsers for the bbc and cycling news. still finding sand caked on my toes from the session.
not a bad morning. we may be poor, but i love our life. these are the days i appreciate and in time will come to reflect as easy days in the south pacific life.

I'm stoked to have this medium to communicate to those who stumble across this or for those that actually know of it and will seek it out.
** A dislclaimer though would be required I suppose. If for some reason you do not agree or like whats posted. "Ah well, and suck it up, TFL" ** :-)
