lantern festival

last night we attended the japanese lantern festival here in honolulu. a celebration to pay respects to lost loved ones off all kinds & to send positive wishes to those in the world. a melting pot of people gathered from all over the country as well as various regions in asia to partake in the ceremony.
maybe about 12-18 thousand people gathered for an afternoon combination of memorial weekend bbq's, beach activities, dance, food & sunshine. donations were accepted from those who wanted to have a lantern sent out into the pacific on their or the families honor.
we wanted to pay respects to Ye's & my family:
Grandmother(s)
Duc
Noah

Full Moon surfing
the last couple of nights we've seen some pretty bright moonlight high up in the sky over the south pacific. the cloud coverage has been sparse, the day time temps have been in the upper 80's & the stars @ night have been bright. the perfect setup for some night time full moon surfing.
a bunch of us headed down last night to "canoes" in proper order to celebrate our friend Krista's 33rd birthday with a little moon walking...hawaiian style.
the water was warm w/ the moon just glowing softly over the island. lots of laughing & people dropping in on some waist high slow waikiki rollers. the paddle is only a hundred yards or so off shore, & since the city is right there the lighting is pretty decent as well.
after that it was home to a warm bed & a good nights sleep.

post E3 lowdown
Aloha, back in the saddle after a week away. oh brah..it’s nice to be back in the tropics & far away from the vortex of oddities that some people in the world call “LA”. What a show that turned out to be. In retrospect the trip was relatively jam packed, most of the time it felt like a fast motion movie w/ us the viewer on slowmo speed. Maybe I’ve gone native & now view my life as a possibility of cruzing rather then being trapped in a rat race. Could be that or I’m just over it already & could care less about the fast lane glam life of the “in” feeling. I guess it's better summed up as "different strokes for different folks".
Some post E3 feedback:
About 75-100 thousand people a day attended the game convention. Every type of big, small, odd & unique game company in the world had some type of presence there. Lots of foot patrol as well as booth slumming to be had by all. Including more booth babes, alcohol, sugar, red bull, goth, techy, digital camera straped pasty white geeks then you could shake darth vader's death ray at. StIMULus overload for the ears & eyes. After a few days there it was great to be out in a quiet place with the ability to hear again. As for the game review's...we played a bunch of super cool rally race games as well as checked out some of the most spectacular preset footage of games to come to the market. As usual ea sports, konami, namco, tecmo, ncsoft, xbox, sony, sega, ubisoft & many others put on some damn fine displays of gaming entertainment. Of course we checked out our own market as well. Poking around to see what the 2005/06 new games will look like. :-}

the southern swells have been cranking the past couple weeks. plenty of waves for the folks living down here to have some fun in sun. the draw back is that the muscles get tight & sore. so ye decided it was time to drag me to the park for some saturday morning yoga.
we camped out at our favorite palm tree & let the sun just warm the day.

ye finding some creative shade to work me over in yoga

lots of respect for this
the following text is from cycling news & i thought some of you who do not see the sight might really enough this:

" German strongman Jens Voigt (CSC) made a blind couple's dreams come true, when he rode with them on a tandem. Last December, Katja Löffler sent a letter to Eurosport asking whether they could help give her husband Michael a special birthday present: some kind of training session with his favourite cyclist Jens Voigt. But it had to take place on a tandem, because both she and her husband are blind.
"Ulli Jansch from Eurosport asked me if I wanted to do it," Voigt commented on team-csc.com. "At first I was a little bit scared, not so much because Michael is blind, but I was afraid if I did this, perhaps a lot of people suddenly wanted me to participate in this and that. I mean, you can't please everybody, no matter how hard you try."
Voigt agreed, and a Eurosport commentator borrowed a racing tandem from disabled World Champion Manuela Fuchs, replaced the clipless pedals with normal ones, and picked up the Löffler family, who had travelled by train from Hamburg to Berlin. They met Jens at a quiet street in a forest near his home.
According to Jansch, it was a very warm, emotional scene, when Jens met the two Löfflers. He hugged them both and they started chatting as had he known them for a long time. "First I tried the tandem on my own, and then I rode with both Michael and Katja," said Voigt. "Obviously they don't see the corners, etc. but they can feel it and adapt to your movement, so it was really no problem at all, and I think they had a lot of fun."
The Löfflers couldn't believe their dream had come true, so they called friends and relatives to be sure it really happened. And then the climax; Jens invited them to his home for Christmas cookies. Michael and Katja asked a bunch of questions and they learned a lot about the life and the career of Jens. They were really happy, when they took the train back home. "

feeling a lil' squirrely this week

testing out the new fin setup all this week. so far it's getting a goooood review. i'm really starting to dig the 2+1 setup w/ a cutaway "squirrel" fin in the center box. alot more drive from the board w/ some sweet responsive turning power. we call my board the marsh-mellow board since she's big'n wide. the new fin setup though is like a new pair of shoes for her, she's all sassy & spunky this week. we'll see how it handles the big swell coming in "maybe" tonight on into the weekend. suppose to be 3-5 then bump to 4-6. which for all of you who want to know what that means? it goes like this: 3-5 hawaiian is about 6-10ft face on the average sets, & 4-6 is about 8-12ft regular measurement face of wave. i've already started day dreaming about the potential....so here it goes. i'm rubbing my buddha dolls belly & wishing for:
3-6 on the big sets, glassy rollers coming in on a low tide going high, light trades 5-10, low dawn patrol crowds, high numbers of regulars, w/ back to back sets & a 10 minute wait for the next pair of sets. :-)
yeah yeah i know, it's a wish list....but to tell you the truth this week has had all the right elements to make it happen! which in irony is all part of the stoke, the anticipation of what could be.
on to some other news, tahiti has been getting is fair share of waves over the weekend. check out these 2 shots.

"Tahitian charger Raimana Van Bastoloer went w/in an inch of losing his life. He was towed into a solid 12 footer by his ski driver Reef Macintosh, who gunned it but couldn't quite make it over the shoulder & had to bail the PWC - which was caught in the lip & launched over the falls, as Raimana was pulling in. He barely made it out & the PWC was totally destroyed on the reef. " - surfline.com

shane dorian jet setted to surf these types of waves & getting a super surly dream of a lifetime

been busy
geez, seems like we've been so busy latley. to much work & to much stress. @ times it feels like my only quiet space is out in the waves. thankfully there has been plenty of swell the last week to allow me to get out & away from the business of the day to day "to do's". even with a draggin head cold i still need to paddle out. amazing how a good pounding in the waves or a nice glassy wall can make you feel like life is still.
anyhow, great little party this weekend over at val's house. lots of surfers that you normally see in the water on a day to day basis were over to wish a friend a happy b-day. (good food, friendly people, surf flicks, booze and sweet deserts)
then this morning we all met up again out in the waves. the sunrise was epic this morning as well. a few turtles stopped by to bob around as long glassy waves peeled through the the lineup.
more to come later...
