The Healing Power of Foods & Detoxification

aloha everyone,
i just wanted to share with you all the newspaper article that one of my clients wrote on us for the sunday edition. there's a great picture with us holding our veggies with a great view of honolulu from our waiting area.
love,
ye

"Naturopathic physicians promote healthy diets to detoxify the body"

While many are slipping into their summer swimsuits, there are a lot more people looking into the mirror and lamenting what they see. There's nothing like tight Spandex to demonstrate how our busy lifestyles have left us to eat on the run and cut back on recreation time.

As we take stock of our sedentary bodies, we're awakened to the need to reclaim our health and maintain a healthy balance, but dread getting started. But health practitioners promise you'll feel better in the end.

Anything beats the fatigue, poor digestion, excess weight, muddled thinking, aches and pains that are among the symptoms of neglecting our bodies, and the first steps are as easy as drinking water, getting enough sleep and eating your veggies.

It's obvious that "junk food makes your body feel junk," said Dr. Lori, a naturopathic physician who recently presented a "Nutrition and Detoxification" seminar for an audience of about 30 at the Pali Golf Course.

"Soda, chips, foods high in sugar or that contain a lot of chemicals and toxins affect the body, even if you don't notice it right away," she said. "We try to get people away from processed food."

Naturopathic physician Dr. Ye also contributed information at the workshop.

"The goal is to deal with people's habits that make them healthy or not so healthy," said Dr. Ye, who grew up in Vietnam with the notion that the right foods have medicinal qualities.

In Ayurvedic medicine practices, flavorful meals are important. Cravings are reduced, Dr. Lori said, if meals incorporate a range of flavors -- sweet, salty, sour, pungent, bitter and astringent. In contrast to the foods of Asia, "American meals are mostly salty," she said.

Both physicians talked about the use of vegetables to detoxify the body, ridding it of contaminants ingested daily in the form of chemical additives, antibiotics and preservatives found in typical processed foods.

The liver has the heavy chore of detoxifying the body, a process that generally takes place while you sleep, with certain optimal evening and early morning times that could be problematic for night owls and those who work night shifts.

Dr. Ye said that according to Chinese medicine, there is a rhythmic circulation of qi from day through night, and each organ has a certain peak time. The gallbladder peaks from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., and the liver peaks from 1 to 3 a.m. The gallbladder is responsible for storing and secreting bile, which aids in digestion. The liver also has a major role in digestion, metabolism and ridding the body of environmental and ingested toxins. Poor liver function can result in abdominal bloating, reduced immunity, sugar cravings and an inability to lose excess weight.

Greens that help detoxify the liver include kale, collard greens, dandelion greens, beet greens, mustard greens, Swiss chard, spinach, arugula, watercress, basil, cilantro, ong choi, choi sum and bok choi.

Such bitter, dark green, leafy greens stimulate the organs to release enzymes that aid in digestion, Ye said, but convincing nongreen eaters to add them to the diet can be difficult.

"They can be bitter and intense," she said. "Steam the vegetables for a less harsh taste."

Detoxifying vegetables that might be easier to take include artichokes, beets, carrots, daikon, burdock, onions and red cabbage.

"Artichokes are great for reducing cholesterol," said Dr. Ye.

All of the vegetables add another essential detox ingredient to the diet: fiber. Fiber binds to toxins and helps release them through bowel movements, helping to prevent colon cancer by eliminating waste quickly, Ye explained.

"Good elimination is critical," said Dr. Lori, who said this applies to all systems, from proper breathing to deliver fresh air to lungs and cells, to the lymphatic system that gets a boost through massage, to sweating through the skin's pores or eliminating liquids through the bladder.

When it's hot outside, it's fairly easy to remember to drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

"Water makes up about 65 percent of our bodies," said Dr. Lori, adding that good old H2O is responsible for the integrity of our cells. When people are dehydrated, cells cannot function, resulting in fatigue, skin disorders, constipation, headaches, irritability and other problems.

Dr. Ye suggests starting the day with two glasses of warm water.

"It's like clockwork; your body will eliminate," she said.

ONE KEY WORD that comes up in any discussion of detoxing the body is antioxidants, which help to combat the destructive impact of free radicals on the body, said Lori.

Yes, it's science, but unlike high school science that causes eyes to glaze over, it's a different story when you can look at your own aging as evidence of the havoc caused by free radicals running amuck in the body.

A free radical is a highly reactive molecule that speeds around the body like a wayward taxi driver, binding to and destroying body components like cells and DNA. Free radicals are responsible for the oxidative damage responsible for the aging process, as well as heart disease and cancer. Think of it as rusting from the inside out, with damage accumulating and speeding up over time.

Antioxidants help to neutralize free radical activity, therefore helping to prevent heart disease, cancer and a variety of other degenerative diseases, Lori said.

"Beta carotene, selenium, vitamin E and vitamin C are great antioxidants," she said, and can be easily obtained by eating a diet rich in colorful fruits and vegetables.

ANOTHER REASON to give up your junk food diet is due to its typical high sugar content. Sugar is another dietary outlaw.

Those who suffer from diabetes are well acquainted with the problems that result from blood sugar imbalances. At the least, Ye said that studies have shown the body's ability to fight infection decreases hours after it is eaten, due to a decrease in white blood cells. Sugar could also affect mental and emotional balance, affecting mood.

For those who can't imagine a diet without sugar, it's possible to use Stevia, available at health food stores, as a substitute. Brewer's yeast and B vitamins also can help stabilize blood sugar levels.

Lori said it's important to introduce dietary changes slowly to avoid feeling like the sacrifice is too great and being discouraged. "Try one bitter green a week ... try it raw, cooked and with sauce. It's all about finding a rhythm in the nutritional process," she said.

Explore food choices like you would an art project, she said: "Look at your life and see what is important. If you want to feel different and have a different life, you need to do something different."

No one says it's easy. Optimal, high-level wellness requires a dose of dedication, but the effort -- and the possibility of seeing a new you in that swimsuit in the mirror -- might be worth the results.

metallica

ok ok, suppose i can post this just cuz deep down my roots are engrained in the early albums of metallica. some of my best mtn bike rides have been with garage days/ 5.98 ep cranking in the ears. as a kid i was a heavy metal local boy who ran with the wrong crowd & always seemed to get away with all kinds of trouble.

point of the story..? youth!
well moving on,..last night i skipped out of work to catch the end of the last swell. hit the waves at 5 & surfed until 7:30. damn great session as the 10' walden was putting on a clinic. i've learned that sometimes the board just wants to have its own fun. as a side note it should be said that the 5pm surf session mimics the highway traffic conggestion. (lots of people in a rush, everybody trying to go go go, pleny of people getting agro on short boards as all try to catch a wave, people dropping in on each other & just general younger aged chaos to release tension) so to regulate this nonsense i ride the 10 footer. :-) its better to sit deep, have some patience, pick the best waves & hammer through the crowds slicing & weaving along the wall w/ a cat ate the mouse grin.

kirk_hammett_mv.jpg.w300h215.jpg
but last night someone in the lineup caught my eye. low & behold sitting there is kirk hammet of metallica. an icon of modern rock & older varations of speed metal. nice guy & seemed to be friendly when i said hello. most of us in the line up gave him a hoot & a holler when he caught some waves.

but out there.......nobody is going to cut you any favors if you intend to sit in the lineup. you still need to hold your own.

so in that light i'm sorry about taking so many waves kirk. but hey, years ago you were happy to charge 50+bucks for a ticket. :-)
karma is odd at times.

new york new york

freedom_tower_2.jpg

i love architecture, design, the proper use of a skyline, the swanky NYC attitude. but......wtf are we doing building something so huge, big, tall, better (in some eyes) & glitzy? as a fellow new yorker this is just one more feather in the cap of amercia's ability to just go over the top. pataki is a wanker at times just looking to match up to all the expectations laid before him. god knows you bet hiliary clinton deep down inside loves this new "fight back capitalistic we can do it attitude" that NY is kicking back in the times when bush & cheny are being mocked in the middle east.

"This new design reflects a soaring tribute to freedom and a bedrock commitment to safety and security," ~ New York Governor George Pataki

i wonder if they will have extra large parking spaces for all the execs to slide the town cars, suv's & hummers? better yet...i wonder which firms & what the particular reaches of those will have in the world economy? ie: who's hands are really dirty...like the speculation around some of the last tentants? hmmmm it's a interesting thought thats for sure.

Pot of Gold...

alohas,

just checking in...it's been quite a while since i've posted. the old man....aka grandma, is harassing me and making me feel guilty about neglecting "his/our blog fans".

hmmm, the present moment is all about me eating ghiradelli chocolate chips, typing away on our macintosh computer, perched on a bamboo coffee table, while i'm sitting on our little meditation cushion...with deva premal's "love is space" cd playing through our little speakers.

the future consists of me anticipating a phone call from lori, my colleague, business partner and dear friend to let me know that i've got to get in the car and assist in our upcoming birth. this is the mom's 4th baby...so it should be a quick one. then on thursday, we'll be teaching a naturopathic pediatrics class to a lot of our mom's that we've helped delivered their babies and some other clients of ours. we're a bit apprehensive about when this baby is coming. that's the thing with babies...babies come when babies want to come. everything stops for them!

and the past today, was about corey and i jumping in the water after work for a sunset surf session to cleanse the day. the sun was setting, a beautiful rainbow overhead, with the very end of it pouring into the "line-up" of the surfers...yet, no pot of gold. that's okay...everyday's a pot of gold.

love you all! and please stop by and post a comment...corey gets lonely from time to time and apreciates feedback :)

namaste,

soul sista'

welcoming the summer solstice

sumsol 4.jpg
summer is here. damn we love the end of june...
check out our summer solstice pics from a party we had monday night. we decided that in honor of our beautiful mother earth, sun & moon that having a party to celebrate them would be a fine thing to do. especially on the eve of the longest sunshine day of the year.

we only sent out only 10 emails & i guess word just traveled from there. it ended up being lots of people, great pupu's (app's), BBQ'ing, beers, tea & the list goes on. the entertainment was an unexpeceted treat with people playing guitar (thanks to kev for bringing the music) singing, dancing, kids playing & even some folds decided to test their gymnastic skills on the beach.

sumsol10.jpg
as the sunshine gave way to the full moon it just so happened that some of our friends brought their fire dancing gear. we were treated to a couple stoked shows under a glowing moonlight.
sumsol 1.jpg

sumsol 2.jpg

sumsol8.jpg
we thought the night had hit its highlight at that point. yet once again we were wrong. turns out in the crowd of old & new friends was a samuari watermelon act. nothing better to end the day then a great chopping w/ some hoots & hollers from a crowd as the would be samuri slices the hell out of a few watermelons.

thanks to all that swung by to have a laugh & visit. it was much appreciated and we plan on having a real ol'fashion summer bbq real soon.

just some basic tid bits about the summer solstice:
So in general, the northern hemisphere is getting more direct sunlight, which heats the Earth most efficiently, than the southern hemisphere. This is summer for people in the northern hemisphere. During the summer, the Sun is also above the horizon longer than it is during the winter. The summer solstice is the longest day of the year.

girl in the curl

ok ok, this is very blog worthy news.
ye caught an epic wave today. the conditions were junk, the wind was blowing out everything & the line up was getting jittery while waiting for a wave with some decent quality.

after about a hour or more of this we decided it's time to go & heat up w/ a cupa coffee. on the paddle in we usually catch a couple small rollers to have some fun and horse around. the motto we have is that the last couple little waves on the way in one should try to practice some technique, footwork or trick. something to keep the skills wandering.

today for ye's last wave she caught a sweet inside shoulder high set wave. a perfect 45% angle drop on a bowling out glassy wall. she dropped to the inside right of the board, slid her hands along the wall as she crouched into a small stance on the wave while the white wash crumbled across her back & the tail of the board. pigtails flapping in the breeze as she b-lined for the shoulder w/ a nice backside cut back only then to be follwed up shortly with a front side cut to take the wave into shore.

some great decisions on style & board position, no doubt. that was the wave of the spring so far for her. just the right combination of wave riding on a junky day & coming out of the ocean w/ that ear to ear grin.

gotta love the stoke after something like that.

cutting back

some mornings just gel...
up @ the crack of darkness w/ eager speculation of the new swell hitting last night while we were fast asleep. loaded up the van & headed down to diamond head. looked like little to no wind, glassy waves with little to no chop & calm morning skies. stroked out to the break with only 3 people in the water. caught some fun head high waves, dragged the finger on the wall, closed the eyes & rode the wall to the shoulder. sweeping up from the pit to the lip & drawing a nice "s" carve cutt back throwing the hands in the air like a rollercoaster ride. only to return to the peak & drop back to a front side return. those few moments feel so drunkenly addictive. the motion of dropping in from the peak on a wave the size of a vw van w/ a vantage of the next 50 yards being the same. combined w/ a pink sunrise, the smell of fresh south pacific ocean & a rainbow stretching her warm glow over your head. @ this point life just stops & the stoke is unfolded.

2hours this morning & it was time to cruz to work. wish i could have stayed longer, but for some reason she ( the ocean) just sent me a nice cruzer wave & i headed in. grabbed a cup of coffee & chatted w/ the bishman on the way home about life & the stoke still burning from the session we just had.

kissed ye goodbye for the morning & was off for the days events.
guess its all about the little things...

Great job ladies!

1:2 mara.jpg
congrats to the gals for a race well done. 330am came very early sunday morning & with that brought getting ready for the 1/2 marathon. the starting line gun cracked at 5am w/ the weather being a breezy cool morning. perfect conditions for a 13.1 mile run around the beach area, up to diamond head, around kahala & then back to the park. the gals looked strong during the whole run. i think the strategy was to be a moderate paced start, with the option remaining to pick off the stragglers as they approached the finish. :-)

the king has swung by to say hello

king kamehameha day is tomorrow. he ruled the hawaiian islands for more than a century. legend has it that he was born at the time of the appearance of halley's comet & that this was a sign that he would rise to greatness. in honor of that we have a rock'n swell that has started to hit as of last night. it looks to be peaking as of friday & saturday. which just so happens to be the kings holiday celebrated by the islands.

gloallhgt1.jpg
(the south pacific is ALIVE this week end)
this mornings session was a bit choppy due to wind. thinking about heading out for a double session though & getting in another couple hours while the sunsets.

in the morning it looks like ye & i are heading out for another session & then meeting up with a group of friends to teach them how to surf down in waikiki. should be a fun time to spread some aloha & just have a ol'fashion damn good time at the beach. later in the day we are off to makaha for a camping trip on the west side of the island.

damn i'm stoked...

aloha ~

the present

korean temp 2

these shots are from a visit we made to a korean temple about 2 valley's or so across the island. it was during the celebrated birthday of the buddha. by far this particular temple has one of the most colorful expressions of craft. all those beautiful colors you see have been individually painted. its so peacful there that you feel as if you've been dropped into asia somewhere back in time. to visit a place like this, to see the monks walking peacfully, the glance of an inherently friendly person....it struck a cord & reminded me to think about the fake plastic world we live in today. about how "i" can try harder everday to search for the good in people & life.

paul.jpg
(sorry for the copyright props on this photo, but hey...no need to pay if i give the props for non-resale use)

ok back to the point @ hand, just found this shot off a local guys site who shoots out here in the water for side cashola. had to post it in honor of a good buddy of ours, which is him in the photo. this guy is a wicked boggie boarder as well as a surfer. the only guy i know who can drop in on a head high - 2ft over head & go straight to a headstand, stick it all the way to the shoulder & come out w/ no neck pains to boot! i've seen paul do this & the lineup just goes wild. all da locls give'm hoots & hollars for pulling into a wave like this.

i've tried this lil'move several times. ye gets mad at me cuz after a few stunts like this i need massage therapy. "thats what i get for trying stupid shit like that" is all she says...

lol...i try it anyway.

summer swells

finally the swell trains are starting to switch their preferred directions. rather then coming in @ a NW, N, W direction its now moving from a S, SE, SW flow. the winter storms off the new zeland, tasman sea, easter island as well as several other locations tend to brew up nice waves to trickle up here.

post session reports from the weekend:
surfed ahella lot this past weekend. (4hrs friday, 2 sat, 2 sun & about 2 this morning) the stoke was great & mixed up the breaks so i could get a good variety. friday night was the best session of'm all. paddled out w/ about 100 people in the water for the 5 o'clock after work madness. i've learned that the trick to handle this is when its busy like that......better to bring the 10 footer. easier to sit deep way past everyone & wait for the bombers. don't get as many waves as others with this approach, but it does net some sweet glassy monsters.

@ about 645pm the sun dropped over the sky & she started to part her way to her more alluring sister the moon. the crowds dwindled & the wind backed off. leaving about 10 of us to surf shoulder to head high waves for about 45minutes under the twilight of the sun & moon. catch as many as you could handle paddling for. i literally got to shore in the black of night w/ exhausted arms & out of breath. some of the best feelings of stoke are the most raw i suppose.

this morning was fun, a bit warbly & funky shaped but fun all the less.
waves are suppose to hold through the week & then pick up again by friday for another summer swell to hit.

alohas

lani's 1
just a quick couple shots from a weekend adventure. in these photo's we were goof'n around up at Lani's on the northshore. waves were pretty sweet that day. out in the middle break they were at least headhigh w/ the occasional outside set hitting @ about 8ft faces. there were many turtles bobbing around that day. pretty good size ones were about 1/3 or 1/2 the size of a hood of a car. i'd say there was about 10+ swimming all around us. it's rumored that they are good luck when you see them out in the water. we did feel a little special that day..

now this is really funny. the ben & jerry's crew have created a antitheft device for your pints against significant others, roomies or other bandits that might want to raid the freezer for munchy purposes.

obviously it's a humor oriented gift, but it would send a good message to all us double spoon dipping thieves of the sweet goodness.
