7.23 (part 2)

jump5.jpg

wanted to post a couple more pics of last saturday's outing...
after a good long birthday nap, ye hooked me up with a spa day.
(massage, facial and the works)

later in the eve ye had planned a dinner over at indigo's. where untold to me there awaited 15+ great hawaii friends. it was really shocking to see so many people come together. i was touched & very happy to see many kind faces.

at this point the rest of the night is fuzzy, seemlessly passing into a dreamlike state as another year passed in my life. thanks to all of you who shared in the day. i feel so humble by the people so close.

7.23 (part 1)

drop1.jpg
one a day a year we all get to have a special day. saturday was mine for the 31st time. what better way to break into the 30's then go sky diving. ye had something already setup which was a very unexpected surprise. so we headed up to the north shore just outside the town of haleiwa to throw ourselves out of the sky towards earth....
jump3.jpg
drop3.jpg
cloud coverage was heavy when we arrived so we thought we might have to wait for a while. of course we were excited to go & then realized we had forgotten one of the two things they asked us to bring. SHOES! flip flops are not going to cut a good landing, not to mention we would feel bad if our flip flops fell off at 10,000 feet & landed on some unlucky poor sap standing in their yard. needless to say the group we went with had a pile of hand me downs we could dig through to wear for the jump. style is not an option when looking for a shoe within a size of your normal kicks. anyhow, we had to wait for a bit to let mother nature water the lawns & mtn side. so to kill some time we headed out for breakfast at haleiwa cafe. (relatively famous surfer hangout/ breakfast joint) was cool to see the roomies there as well as some new frineds from british columbia. after a large breakfast with all the sides & hot coffee one could handle.....low & behold the sun popped out & it was @ that point we realized we're going to be jumping in 5 minutes on a full stomach. about that time we got a call from the manager of the jump base. in her great broken chinese voice she proclaimed "where rrrr u? da pane is goin to be weavin soon"

so we hustle over & with little instruction we were ready to be hurled out of the plane. "don't worry you have no real need to do anything but fall out of the plane" was our instructors fonder highlights of the lesson. which brought up the immediate memory of signing the waiver an hour ago which stated about 20 times "you may die, you will die, you could die, it's possble you may/ will/ could die, please sign here here & here. by the way are you willing to take full responsibility for the fact you could die doing this? if so please sign again & again."
(Corey's goodluck shirt)

we hired a video guy as well as a camera guy to give us a little more special treatment. (which by the way the video of ye is great!) so at about 12,000 feet the door opens & we shuffle like penguins to the edge for our slip into the blue yonder. this is where the only real lessons of the day occurred. "head back, arms on the straps, 3..2..1..& we're screaming throught the air @ 130mph for about 25+ seconds. or another way to look @ it is 180ft per second. (4500ft in estimated 25 seconds)

thats one hell of a rush. we were hooked for sure. i had a moment in life where the rush was so sic i could have just died & vanished w/ that feeling inside. the cool thing was that the camera guy & my tandem guy grabbed hands & started to do a centrifical force spiral move. all of us spinning around & then the camera guy lets go and lauches about 30 feet away as we all rip through the clouds towards the ground. which by the way is a wicked feeling to drop through the clouds hurling toward earth. it gives a really distinct perspective of the geography
& layering.

once the chute was pulled the views were choice. the tropical waters, reef formations & landscapes were epic. one hell of a way to grow up thats for sure. :-)

art of science competition

tripped over this today....its beautiful

What is it you ask???.......

Microfluidic Research and Engineering Laboratory, Department of Chemical Engineering
SECOND PRIZE WINNER
This image illustrates evolving dynamical patterns formed during the spreading of a surface-active substance (surfactant) over a thin liquid film on a silicon wafer. After spin-coating of glycerol, small droplets of oleic acid were deposited. The usually slow spreading process was highly accelerated by the surface tension imbalance that triggered a cascade of hydrodynamic instabilities. Such surface-tension driven flow phenomena are believed to be important for the self-cleaning mechanism of the lung as well as pulmonary drug delivery.

moonlight session

alohas...
sleepy this morning as it was tough to get up & moving. we ended up getting back from a 11pm-1am session under the bright moonlight. we paddled out from "rockpiles" under a blanket of stars & stroked on over to a secret spot for a session. head high & glassy waves cranked on into the early break of the AM. it was epic since there was only 4 of us to the whole break.

the feeling of gliding down a headhigh face as its walling up in front of you.....your vision limited with only a glowing sparkle of moonlight on the wave. its all about sensations, feelings & balance. which ironically is a similar way a romantic will live a life. in search of the freedom to love, express & to grow.

these are the moment i search for. a space in time that is the sweet spot of life. where all is in focus within the moment, the mind is at ease & the risk is inviting you for more more more.

this is why we surf.

busy..busy..busy

sorry for the delay. been so busy that its just been fruity around here lately. considering the swells are low right now i suppose a little break to take care of some of lifes daily todo's is a good busy.

on a more domesticated note: i finally got the grill dialed in this week. most of this spring has been a hit or miss with the little black ufo. she's been giving me a run for my money on how she likes it. however with some intense trial & error, a few burned fingers & salvaged veggies....i think we have lift off.

so now its time to fire up the barbie, toss a few hunks of rub'd tuna on the flames & enjoy the warm summer nights.

adirondack style design

adk1.jpg
adk2.jpg
adk3.jpg

love the design & details added to this house. some great classic adirondack influenced architecture with some sassy new modern aspects. add about 4' feet of base snow then dust it off with a fresh layer of 6". head out for a crosscountry ski session in the crisp afternoon air, only to be quickly followed up with a stoked up fireplace waiting at home. relaxed sunset w/ a glass of wine & i'd call that a little slice of mtn heaven.

which eye are you looking at?

stereorealist.jpg

finally scored the david white stereo realist camera! i fell in love with its images back when i went to see a buddy's (marlin) madagascar slide show. shooting 3d on an old skool 1950's early 60's camera looked like a great challenge.

i'm still on the first roll, but its a good feeling. like a little boy who just got his first science kit or model airplane. the possibilities are endless when shooting a 3d image.

Dalai Lama

dalai-lama.jpg
"There is no need for temples, no need for complicated philosophies. My brain and my heart are my temples; my philosophy is kindness."
~ Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama, (Tenzin Gyatso), is the spiritual and temporal leader of the people of Tibet. He was born on the 6th of July 1935 in the small village of Taktser in North East Tibet. Born to a peasant family, he was recognised at the age of 2 as being the reincarnation of his predecessor the13th Dalai Lama.

The Dalai Lama, which means ocean of wisdom, comes from the Buddha of Compassion who chose rebirth as a way to serve the people. After the 13th Dalai Lama died in 1933 it became the job of the Tibetan government to seek out the child in whom the Buddha of Compassion was reborn. Previous successors would usually be located through their possession of attributes similar to those of the Dalai.

He was discovered through a sacred lake known to show visions of the future. A vision of the house he lived in was seen and the high lamas and dignitaries began their search throughout the country for the house.

The new Dalai Lama was enthroned in 1940. He began his education at 6 and by the time he was 25 he was awarded a Doctorate in Buddhist philosophy.

At the age of only 16 he became the political leader of Tibet as it was under threat from China. He was
forced into exile in India in 1959 after the Chinese took over Tibet from where he tried to find peace for the Tibetan people.

In 1989, the Dalai Lama was given the Nobel Peace Prize for "forward looking proposal for the solution of international conflicts, human rights issues and global environmental problems". He has travelled the world to encourage universal responsibility, love, compassion and kindness.

The Paradox of Our Age

alohas,
we just recently celebrated the dalai lama's birthday party on wednesday, the night of the new moon, with some friends on the beach. setting off fireworks, playing music on the beach, teaching kids yoga, nourishing our bodies, meeting new people and connecting with old friends...

once again, bringing together all types of people to our potluck on the beach. we've decided to hold one at least once a month to contine to extend our little community here on oahu. it was a day of bringing people together and acknowledging that we are all "interrelated and interconnected"...we are all the same, human beings. it was also a day of acknowledging the significance of "loving compassion" in others, as well as ourselves.

i just wanted to share with you all a little something that lori and i found in the gift shop in india. the gift shop was within walking distance of the dalai lama's temple in mc cleod ganj. tibetan incense was burning throughout the store. the sanskrit chant done by the buddhist monks "om mani padme hum" was playing in the background.

a reality check...as i read this on the wall before me.
namaste...

We have bigger houses but smaller families
more conveniences, but less time

We have more degrees, but less sense
more knowledge, but less judgement
more experts, but more problems
more medicines, but less healthiness

We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor

We built more computers to hold more information to produce more copies than ever, but have less communication

We have become long on quantity, but short on quality

These are times of fast foods but slow digestion

Tall man but short character

Steep profits but shallow relationships

It's a time when there is much in the window but nothing in the room

Serginho Laus: the stoke part 2

SL1.jpg
serginho has set a new world record by surfing non-stop for 10.1 km (6.3 miles) down Brazil's famous river bore wave, called the Pororoca. for those that are like wtf is a bore wave? well allow me to edumacate yerself.....
"The interaction of the tide with the outgoing current from a river can sometimes produce an unusual solitary wave that proceeds up the river from its mouth. Called a "tidal bore", this wave illustrates the depth dependance of the wave velocity of waves from the ocean.

The precondition for the creation of a tidal bore is the existence of an outflow current speed from the mouth of a river that exceeds the incoming speed of waves from the ocean associated with the incoming tide. The wavelength of tidal waves is longer than the depth of the shallow water near the shore, so they move shoreward with a velocity that depends upon the water depth."

SL2.jpg
Serginho Laus, who spent 33 minutes and 15 seconds surfing the Pororoca. The state of Amapá has the largest number of bores in Brazil, and it was in the nest of bores that Laus faced for the first time the largest fluvial phenomenon in Amazonia.

team riding

S-ARMSTRONGHINCAPIE4916.jpg

of course as many of us know the 2005 tour is in motion. all the hype is on lance lance lance. which is good since he can deal & he's the damn man when it comes to the tour.

but his team is really the true engine that helps lance behind the scenes. especially his fierce srgt. in arms george hincapie. i mean seriously, this guy day in & out is the go to guy. pull, chase, food pickups, water, drop'em, paceline you name it george does it all. as a cyclist george's strongest weakness is big mtn climbs at 75-100% climbers pace. which all on its own is a speciality, but he'll ride as hard as he can & is under the agreement that in the mtn's he rides until he blows up. for those that don't cycle, that means ride until you crack & fall back due to exhaustion.

so....to you george thanks for the many years of loyal service in postal & now discovery. you shed some strong light for american cyclists to see what team work can feel/ look like.

alittle fireworks, surfing & blowing up my back yard

as w/ everycity in the good'ole usa, honolulu likes to send up some fireworks for the spirit of the holiday. thousands of people flock to every square inch of possbile space near the beach to watch the shelling. so...in fine creative spirit we loaded the vw van w/ 6 people & boards & headed out for a fireworks surf session @ canoes.

74051.jpg
w/ glow sticks wrapped around as necklaces /braclets we plowed through the crowds & paddled out. the fireworks show was cool & the waves were head /shoulder high & super glasssssy! it was epic out there under the stars, moonlight & bursting colors over the island.

after the session we headed home for a little after party show where we set fire to some much more toned down fireworks. i still managed to burn my thumbs though.

hey, what would the 4th be with our some singed hairs & burnt fingers on themorning of the 5th?

custom board on the way!

cs1
hot damn let the fun begin. just went to our shapers place this morning to have a new board cut to spec. 8' pintail 3" thick w/ a semi-gun 15.5" shaped nose. i'm so "stoked" about the potential of this design. (nice rocker, double barrle channels that feed into the 2+1 or single fin just perfect)

i've been searching for a design for about a year now, thinking of this & that. in the end i went w/ the idea of a board i could ride in double overhead as well as ride in waist high to head high waves. the motivation stems from the early 70's north shore styles. not as short as the gerry lopez 6'-7' but similar in qualities brought into an 8' shape.

after a few conversations with kimo & taking into account the width & thickness being what they are. the impression is i'll be able to sit a bit deep, catch monster waves & w/ some lucked get tubed. well...monster for me is anything over head to double over head. when its double over head you want to have your shit together. so having a board shaped by a hard chager that loves those types of waves....ends up being a good type of board to have when you want to get tubed this winter in north shore. :-)

end of july the new board will be ready. triple glass 4x4 patch with a nice green color just in time for the august swells. can't wait & i'll be counting the days.
