hot marble glass

headed out this morning w/ the bishman. finally today was able to slump back into a surf routine that is traditional for our wednesday mornings. with all the mothers making recent visits & the surrounding drama it was nice to be back to a quiet dawn patrol session. up early in the cool tropic air. toss on the hoody & load up the sticks. glance over @ the east for a view of the cloud coverage. i swear that sometimes you can tell its going to be a good morning just by the colors of pink & orange off in the distant cool blue skyline.

the view from cliffs this morning was of clean glassy lines & little to no wind.
so we stroked out over to "rights" & started to catch about 4 back to back sets. w/ nobody around & everybody over @ "cliffs"...the sets were b eing split between me, the bishman & colin (aka: nicknamed kermit for his punchy & unique mannerism). many of the waves were chest high w/ smooth long walls.
really easy to make big sweeping cut backs, drag the hands along the wall, make some long "S" turns & even get to the nose before having to ride off the shoulder. it felt like i could just melt away right then & there.

the sun bursted up off in the distance illuminating the island of maui as well as several others w/ a rich pink glow. massive sun beams filtering through the clouds with little reef fish speeding about under your board. it was truly a blissful moment.

it brought back the memory of yesterday morning when the same conditions existed but a quick moving squall blew by causing a beautiful double rainbow to drop in a perfect shape right over us all.
i figured hell..what could beat this..? then off in the short distance a pod of about 50 or so dolphins were quietly moving by. the baby spinners learning how to jump & twist in the air as the parents cruz'd by.

i know i know...i can shut up now. but i will say that i'm convinced that these are the moments that will stick w/ me to tell my grandkids when the day comes. until then i'm just happy to being living these moments & enjoying the ride..

single fins

freeride.jpg
decided to do some long paddling monday night. jumped in the water over at "old man's" break & paddled on down to "paradise". just wanted to get out there for a long haul strech on the single fin big board. felt good to catch a few waves along the way @ various breaks. like stopping by to visit old friends...each of the breaks has its own unique character. felt good to pull in catch a wave or 2 & then move on to the next as the sun was dropping for the day.

speaking of big boards...the other day i was in waikiki doing the family tour thing. decided to cruz over to the surf rack & see what i could dig up while mom shopped for some local hawaiian goods.

i've poked around these racks before. checking out the various boards, shapes & feeling the rails.
on this day though i was really intrigued w/ the fin selections. check'm out for your self...

nice late sunday afternoon shot overlooking haleiwa beach break. fun trip up to north shore for a little surf at puaena point & housewarming bbq over @ some close friends. i like this photo as it was taken really quick @ a passing moment. however the feeling of the image is warm, easy going & healthy.

m&b_thks_2.jpg
took the family around the for some site seeing. this particular drive was into some very tropical backdrops w/ epic views of several valleys, the ocean & city.

a day thanks...

happy thanksgiving!

we're just winding down from our non-traditional thanksgiving dinner: turkey marinated in hawaiian teriyaki sauce with garlic & ginger, mung bean thread stuffing with shitake mushrooms, red & yellow bell peppers, celery, garlic & oyster sauce, detoxifying green salad (check out our cooking show at www.nrgtelevision.com) of kale, endive, escarole, cilantro, goat cheese, garlic macadamia nuts, and pears, kambocha & butternut mashed squash with brown sugar and grandma's (from upstate ny) pumpkin cookies with cream cheese icing. yummy!!!

earlier we had an interesting adventure of trying to pick fresh guava from the tree way up above. corey was trying to knock them down with his surf board leash. i'll have him post the pic' of our highly coveted freshly picked guava.

so many things to give thanks for... life, family, friendships, love, health, peace, shelter, food, water, clean air, mother nature, laughter & giggles, tears of joy & pain, being humbled, growth, for the simple things & the not so simple things in life ;)

corey's mom and his sister are visiting us for a few days. it's been nice to have family here on the island. they remind us of where we came from, how far we've come along, how strong our roots are, so that we can continue to grow.

namaste & xoxo's to you all!

new england winters

sarashouse_1.jpg

for many years now i've always been attracted to the design use of wood in a home. natural wood colors as a true highlight of a house character. when i think of being near the mtn's, i think of log cabin homes. warm, sleepy, loving homes w/ a strong nature feel.

sarashouse_2.jpg

sarashouse_3.jpg
these are a couple of recent shots from my sisters house that her & the hubby are building by hand. looks like for their first house they are both pretty good @ it. i like the location as well. very new england feeling with the rich farm lands of the champlain valley. but also just outside of the adirondack park & 90 minutes away from montreal & burlington, vt.

good cross-country skiing, french styled culture, mtn biking, hiking, food, travel, seasonal weather, grandma's, family & so much more..

geez i miss that area at times.

choices

111205_1.jpg
the weather lately has been tropical no doubt. often stormy in the mtns & sunny @ the beaches. plenty of rainbows, double rainbows, shooting stars, bursting sunrises & glowing sunsets.

even more sweet is the out of season s/sw (2-4hawaiian size) swell hitting the south shore. even a nice (3-5hawaiian size) n/nw swell is hitting the western & northern shores. what's this mean??....well..most if the island right now has at least head high waves(6ft regular height). this my friend is a very beautiful thing for november. lots of people with big grins, sandy toes, great waves, nice glowing tans & epic clear blue 80 degree water.

nothing like leaving the water w/ a stoke that takes away all of lifes thoughts & mind clutter. @ that moment i slump into a weekend routine of tending to the sun burn, dealing w/mild dehydration, a cold shower, a brew & some fresh fish tacos.....topped w/ a nap in the comfy fan blown couch.

this current swell has been a much needed series of sessions. allowing me to span the run of various boards & fin setups @ the house.

run

"I'll sing it one last time for you
Then we really have to go
You've been the only thing that's right
In all I've done

And I can barely look at you
But every single time I do
I know we'll make it anywhere
Anyway from here

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

Louder louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say

To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbye
I nearly do

Light up...

Slower slower
We don't have time for that
I just want to find an easier way
To get out of our little heads

Have heart my dear
We're bound to be afraid
Even if it's just for a few days
Making up for all this mess"

touched up the surly recently & she's ready for action. all this heavy hussy needs now is a military sidecar mount :-)

looking to log some good miles this winter season. well its not really winter here in the tropics, but mentally i still follow the train of thought that december - early march is for most of the cycling world.

don't make fun of her triple cranks either.....she's sensative & will still kick your ass if provoked.

cheater...5

for the past year i've been working hard on being able to surf the nose of the board w/ some kind of grace. to stand on the edge w/ only 5 toes over the nose. to be able to properly setup the drop, make a long drawn out bottom turn for the rise to the lip & thus commencing my walking of the plank.

this past weekend i logged some solid hours surfing. i discovered (again) that the more focused i was on my emotions & energy the better my surfing was. truly being humble w/ the flow of the wave & allowing her to guide me. it felt good to be connected like that with the ocean. it felt healing & humbling.

the sunrises have been cloudy lately w/ low winds out of the east. the sunsets have been cotton candy like with soft hues of pinks, oranges & reds. twas a romantic feeling to see the sun dropping last night in the warm colored skies. the perfect backdrop to illuminate the figures of surfers gliding home.

the orientation of veins in nyc

the pulse of a great city is often based off a few things. a few of the characteristics might be it's people, location, culture & sheer ability of infrastructure. national geographic has put together a very cool break down of how nyc is set up...underground that is.

sin city

vegas_2.jpg
"what's the difference between a sinner & a saint? every sinner has a future & every saint has a past..."
i love that quote.

all be told i think my trip to vegas was a romantic tragedy of sorts. as many do...i went to vegas to have fun, be wild & cut loose. i know i know, what a tragic thought on my part? however besides visting old childhood friends(which was the true point of the trip)....what i did find in that rocket ride of vegas was the unexpected contortion of truth & honesty. an abstract glance into a vortex of vices, love, loss, confusion, romance & peace of mind. in retrospect a bitter sweet window seated view of a mad carnival that i was willing to be part of. an experience that cannot truly be put into words. in the deepest parts of the road can i find what i've been looking for, only to fdiscover (again) its been w/ me all along. no matter where i go...the answer often seems to be already apparent to me.

i suppose vegas was just a stage for the story telling to occur.
