nerfs guns
end of a game cycle. most recent costs for late night amusements are....4 nerfs guns, 30pack of xtra nerf bullets, 2 scooters, 14 red staplers, a few star wars board games, to many cups of ramen & some how i think our coffee maker is adding an extra kick in the joe. hmmmm i wonder how long its been since we've cleaned the filters.?!?.
off topic thought lately has kept me in search of an answer: is coffee tar considered a dessert when u get to the bottom of the cup? like the center of a tootsie pop?
i look out my window last week and realize i needed to get back into society & interact with the humans. from my perch it looks like the world is alive & buzzing around the hive. so i pledged that this past weekend would be social interaction time...which turned out to be not all that bad. twas able to go out dancing with soul sista friday night, surf all weekend, eat some great food, listen to a slack key guitar show, visit with friends & surf some more. :-) was nice to start getting back into the routine of life.
kicked up a side project as well. starting to work on a new board. traded our old junked car in for a newly shaped blank of our choice. SCORE! any shape we want free of charge, well with the exception that my shaper can fix cars & i suck at it. all we need to pay for is the glass job & coloring.
hmmmmmmm
i'm thinking swiss army knife red with small white flames & white fins. a radio flyer looking red rocket.
maybe a 4 fin fish? or something else that can be smuggled into most ocean sides all over the world for a session or more. needless to say it will come to me. until then its time for some summer swells to start cracking with consistent waist fo chest high waves.

it's a baby girl!
i got to do something for the first time in my medical career a couple of evenings ago. i talked a father through delivering his own baby over the telephone!! he assisted the delivery of his baby girl as mommy was standing right over the toilet. he caught her, as he describes it, "just like it was a football." she's perfectly healthy, as is mommy. once again, i'd like to give thanks to all that is...

party wave
and i thought canoes was a party wave....

Sunday Tribune Article, May 14th 2006: Tribune Archive
Lahinch surfers ride their wave to a new world record
RECORDS are there to be broken, and neither the wind nor the moon was going to stand in the way of Lahinch's big moment yesterday. The tide was out, the waves were small, but the surfers of Ireland had united to put the Co Clare resort at the centre of the international surfing movement in a bid to break the world record for having the most surfers on a single wave.
The town had been buzzing all week after word came back from London that its application to attempt to enter the record books had been formally recognised by the authorities in Guinness World Records. Old men in pubs discussed their chances, pinning their hopes on a new generation to carry Lahinch's name to glory.
The crowd began to gather at midday. Usually they would head straight for the surf but yesterday afternoon, there were two problems. Firstly, there wasn't much in the way of surf out past land's end, and secondly they were waiting for the official kick-off at 3pm, when they would bid to etch their name into the immortal pages of the Guinness Book of Records.
Among the eager surfers who travelled to Clare for the event was Peter Conroy, a Dublin fireman who spends most of his week trying to catch waves. "We work a shift system in the fire brigade so there's a lot of time to spend surfing, " he explained. "That's the reason I went for the job in the first place."
At 2pm, the Tiger Beer Blues Band struck up, beginning their set with that immortal rock 'n' roll line, "hello Lahinch". As the band played, men wearing wetsuits and carrying buckets mingled with the crowd, collecting money for the Lahinch Playground Appeal. Surfers may have attitude but they also have a caring side, dude. "Feel free to dance, " urged the singer. "Don't mind the traffic, it's only a minor hazard."
Back on the beach, the judge had arrived. Pamela Schoenhofer of Guinness World Records had flown in to see whether Lahinch had what it takes to become a global surfing landmark.
If watching 170 people surf a wave simultaneously sounds like a strange way to make a living, it is a normal day at the office for German-born Schoenhofer. Her last job was in Rotterdam, where she witnessed an attempt to have the most people dressed as mobile phones. Were they successful? "Yes." How many people were involved? "I can't remember, " she says. "But it was a lot."
Guinness World Records receives 1,000 applications a week and only a tiny percentage are accepted. Just 3,500 records are featured in the Guinness Book of Records.
"We read about the current record, which was set in Rio last year when 42 people surfed a wave, and we thought 'sure that's a piece of cake', " said organiser John McCarthy.
"We'd have 20 people surfing the same wave down here most weekends, so 42 isn't that big a deal."
At 3pm it began. One hundred and seventy surfers took to the water like ducks dressed in black, all trying to stay on the same wave for the required five seconds. They all seemed confident, as was television presenter Hector O hEochagain, who was MC-ing the event.
"Someone get some pints of Guinness for the woman from Guinness, " Hector told the crowd. "We'll get her tipsy and she'll be seeing double. She'll think there were 690 people riding the same wave for four years. On one surfboard."
And so they went up, and then they came down. Every 15 minutes, another attempt at the record was made. It was all filmed by the judge, who will analyse the footage at a later date to see whether the required number of people stayed up on the wave for the required amount of time.
When it was all over, the lads were still confident. "Definitely did it, " said McCarthy.
"The record is ours."
While the tapes made their way back to London, the surfers made their way to the pub, where the party continued all night, everyone in the town toasting the new-found global fame of Lahinch.
Dried off and at the bar, the surfers happily swapped one liquid for another. Water, water everywhere, and quite a lot to drink.

vipassana meditation
"Vipassana, which means to see things as they really are, is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation. It was rediscovered by Gotama Buddha more than 2500 years ago and was taught by him as a universal remedy for universal ills"
"Everyone seeks peace and harmony, because these are what we lack in our lives. From time to time we all experience agitation, irritation, disharmony, suffering; and when one suffers from agitation, one does not keep this misery limited to oneself. One keeps distributing it to others as well. The agitation permeates the atmosphere around the miserable person. Everyone who comes into contact with him also becomes irritated, agitated. Certainly this is not the proper way to live."
"By learning to remain balanced in the face of everything one experiences inside, one develops detachment towards all that one encounters in external situations as well. However, this detachment is not escapism or indifference to the problems of the world. A Vipassana meditator becomes more sensitive to the sufferings of others, and does his utmost to relieve their suffering in whatever way he can--not with any agitation but with a mind full of love, compassion and equanimity. He learns holy indifference--how to be fully committed, fully involved in helping others, while at the same time maintaining the balance of his mind. In this way he remains peaceful and happy, while working for the peace and happiness of others."
"This is what the Buddha taught; an art of living. He never established or taught any religion, any 'ism'. He never instructed his followers to practice any rites or rituals, any blind or empty formalities. Instead, he taught just to observe nature as it is, by observing reality inside. Out of ignorance, one keeps reacting in a way which is harmful to oneself and to others. But when wisdom arises--the wisdom of observing the reality as it is--one come out of this habit of reaction. When one ceases to react blindly, then one is capable of real action--action proceeding from a balanced mind, a mind which sees and understands the truth. Such action can only be positive, creative, helpful to oneself and to others."

life is about not knowing,
having to change,

new front yard
me so happy now. we've FINALLY moved our studio. which just so happens to be an 8minute walk to this break.

the great thing about this blessing is that there is a small custom made jetty with ladders dropping straight into the cove for ease of paddling out. the break is about 75-100yrds out. then a few feet away from the steps is a public shower for a post session rinse. somebody shoot me now cuz i've died & gone to heaven.
from way left out of view is bowls, courts, concessions, renecks, kewalos, point panic & flies. flies is the one u see in the shot. YEAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAA!
lunch time surfing & late night work sunset sessions are going to be had all spring & summer long. i'm so excited i'm getting amp'd just thinking of how remote & tucked away from the city this spot is. most people never come over here cuz its out of the way & a bother. during this photo there was 3 guys out on a friday night!!!!!!
so i've dragged the 9'6" single fin & the 8'.0 thruster into work. even grabbed the binocs so i can quickly scamper to the roof for a birds eye view of the sets.

moonlight session
went out for a little full moon surfing last night. twas nice to paddle out under the stars with little to no clouds. just a fat full moon hanging in the sky. even had some hawaiian music playing on shore for a concert at one of the hotels. nice to be able to surf "canoes" while listening to some ukelele strumming in the back drop over the soft moon lighted island.

soul sista's highlights...
what's new with me? i got into a car accident, shook things up deep inside of me, bought a schwinn beach cruiser fully loaded with a bell, bright lights & a surf rack, watching sunsets more, taking time to breathe, living my life creatively each day, seeing clients, still on break from delivering babies for a couple more weeks, playing in the mountains, training for a half marathon in june, picking plumerias everyday to put in my hair, taking time to be a good housekeeper, lead my first meeting as the president for the doc's here in hawaii, singing karaoke, dancing at least once a week, bought a 1965 kamaka ukulele...carrying it with me everywhere i go, so i can practice, spending quality time with single fin, surfin' every so often, driving all over the island with our new car, doing yoga here & there, making connections, hearing people's stories and creating my own each day. being in the world fresh and new each day, as if it were the first or the last.
(single fin, could you post a pic' of my ukulele playing?)
